What Is KYBELLA®?
Unlike treatments that simply shrink fat cells, KYBELLA® permanently destroys them. It is an injectable formulation of deoxycholic acid, which plays a role in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into submental fullness (a double chin), it initiates a localized breakdown of fat cell walls. Over the weeks following treatment, the body flushes out the cellular debris through its natural metabolic pathways. Once a fat cell is gone, it is permanent, making it a highly effective tool for sculpting a sharper face without surgery.
Who Is A Candidate For KYBELLA®?
KYBELLA® is specifically FDA-approved for the treatment of moderate to severe submental fullness in adults. It is best for clients who:
KYBELLA® is not appropriate for clients with infection or inflammation in the proposed treatment area, and is not recommended for those who have had previous surgical or cosmetic procedures in the submental or submandibular area without prior discussion with your clinician.

Have a defined, localized area of fullness beneath the chin that has persisted despite diet and exercise.
Are not yet ready for or interested in surgical intervention such as liposuction or neck lift.
Have realistic expectations about the number of sessions required and the gradual nature of the results.
The KYBELLA® Treatment
KYBELLA® is an in-office procedure that requires no anesthesia, no incisions, and no recovery period. However, the post-treatment response is more noticeable than most injectable treatments due to the fat cell destruction process.
Before the Procedure
Your clinician will examine the area under and around your chin to map the fat distribution and determine the appropriate injection pattern and volume for your anatomy. A topical numbing agent may be applied to the treatment area to improve comfort during the injections.
The Procedure
Using a fine needle, your clinician administers a series of small injections into the submental fat across a precise grid pattern tailored to your anatomy. The number of injections per session varies depending on the volume of fat present and the treatment area, but sessions are typically completed within 15-20 minutes. Most clients require between 2 and 4 treatment sessions, with each session scheduled at least 1 month apart. In clinical studies, 59% of clients received 6 treatments, the maximum recommended number.
How Deoxycholic Acid Works
Once injected, the synthetic deoxycholic acid disrupts and destroys the membrane of fat cells in the treatment zone. The destroyed cells are then gradually cleared by the body’s lymphatic and immune system over the weeks following each session. Because the fat cells themselves are eliminated, not simply reduced in size, the results in fully treated areas do not reverse with weight fluctuation the way untreated fat deposits can.
Sessions and Treatment Planning
No two clients have identical submental anatomy, which is why the number of sessions required varies. At Deluxe Med Spa and Wellness, your clinician will assess your response after each treatment and adjust the plan accordingly. Sessions are spaced a minimum of 1 month apart to allow the full inflammatory and clearance response from each treatment to resolve before the next.
KYBELLA® Recovery and Results
Immediately After Treatment
KYBELLA® has a more significant post-treatment response than most injectables, and clients should plan accordingly. The swelling, bruising, and tenderness that follow each session are a direct reflection of the fat cell destruction process working as intended.
Avoid extreme heat exposure for 24 hours, including hot showers, jacuzzis, and saunas.
Avoid alcohol and high-sodium foods for 3 days to minimize excess swelling.
Do not massage or manipulate the treatment area, and avoid facials, peels, microdermabrasion, and microneedling for 14 days.
Ice packs may be applied for the first 12 hours to manage swelling.
Continue your normal skincare routine using gentle cleansers only.
Expect noticeable swelling beneath the chin. This is the most consistent and pronounced post-treatment response, and it is normal. Bruising, tenderness, numbness, redness, and areas of firmness in the treated tissue are also common. The swelling typically peaks in the first 24-72 hours and begins to resolve over the following 1-2 weeks, though some residual swelling may persist longer after the first few sessions.
How Results Develop
Results from KYBELLA® are gradual and cumulative. After each session, the body clears the destroyed fat cells over several weeks. Most clients begin to see a visible reduction in submental fullness after their second or third session, with the full result becoming apparent once the treatment series is complete and residual swelling has fully resolved, usually 4-6 weeks after the final session.
Longevity: Because KYBELLA® permanently destroys fat cells in the treated area, the results are considered long-lasting once the treatment series is complete. Significant weight gain can cause remaining untreated fat cells in adjacent areas to expand, so maintaining a stable weight supports the longevity of results.
